Must-Have Genealogy Tools for Family Historians

gifts resources Mar 20, 2020

I surveyed hundreds of genealogists and family historians to find their favorite products and services. The essential must haves, and the things that make their research and life just a tiny bit easier.

The following products are the perfect combo of brilliant, practical and some are completely adorable. Good thing they’re all surprisingly affordable, too!

We hope you find these handy products as awesome as I do.

  1. Genealogy Themed Notebooks
Researching our family history is fun and fascinating. So why the boring notebooks? With these genealogy themed journals, we can take notes in style and stay organized. (Have you seen our desks or the trail of notes we leave everywhere we go?)
  2. Ancestry DNA
Still the most requested DNA test kit in our survey because of its large match base (15 million), research resources, and family matching features. People enjoy the seamless connection with their family trees on  Ancestry.com. Speaking of that...
  3. Ancestry.com Gift Subscription
Yes, we can access Ancestry.com for free at the library, but we love researching at home in our pajamas!
  4. Echo Smart Speaker with Alexa
It's like having your own personal research assistant! This topped the list for the "best splurge gift" ever received and came in 3rd for the most requested gift this year. Alexa can help us with our research by calculating dates, looking up state capitals, calculating distances, telling us about historical events and figures, and much more. Our families appreciate her reminder and timer features, which let us know when it's time to pick up the kids or take dinner out of the oven. Oh, and you can also ask her to play some tunes or turn on the lights, thus never having to get up from your research.
  5. Binders and Dividers
An orgnaized genealogist is a happy genealogist. Keep hard copies of all your important documents and forms.
  6. Cute File Folders
Sure plain file folders do the trick, but we prefer a little flair when doing our filing.  Top picks this year were gold and floral designs.

  7. Flip-Pal Scanner
Hands down the best portable scanner for photos, documents, and mementos. Small and lightweight, toss it in your bag on research trips.
  8. Epson FastFoto Photo and Document Scanner
The world's fastest personal photo scanner. Scan thousands of photos as fast as 1 per second.  Just stack and go! Digitize and preserve all those boxes of old photos.
  9. Flash Drives
Great for backing up our research and genealogy research trips.
